The British Embassy Baghdad currently has a vacancy for a Generator Technician, job grade Administrative Assistant (AA)
The jobholder will be responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and repair of electrical generators and their associated Automatic Transfer Switch Room (ATS). This role includes maintaining central fuel tanks and ensuring fuel quality to guarantee the reliable operation of standby and emergency power systems in compliance with industry standards and safety regulations.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Generator and ATS System Maintenance: Perform routine inspections and scheduled preventive maintenance on diesel electrical generators and ATS (Automatic Transfer Switch) systems. This includes testing, servicing, and ensuring readiness by simulating power failures and verifying correct transfer/retransfer functionality.
- Troubleshooting and Repairs: Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and control system issues in generators (e.g., alternators, speed governors, fuel filters, batteries, coolant) and ATS units (e.g., high current circuit breakers, Socomec units, relays). Replace defective parts and make necessary adjustments to restore full functionality.
- Fuel System Monitoring and Maintenance: Conduct regular inspection and maintenance of central fuel storage tanks, including fuel lines, pumps, and filtration systems. Monitor fuel levels, coordinate refuelling, and sample/test fuel for contamination, water content, and degradation. Implement fuel filtering procedures when necessary.
- Record Keeping and Reporting: Maintain detailed logs of all maintenance tasks, inspections, repairs, and parts usage. Prepare service reports and maintenance logs for supervisor review and ensure documentation is aligned with compliance requirements.
- Safety, Compliance, and Risk Management: Adhere to all local and national electrical codes, safety standards, and environmental regulations. Identify potential hazards, conduct risk assessments prior to work, and implement appropriate control measures to ensure a safe working environment.
- Emergency Response and Availability: Respond promptly to generator or ATS malfunctions and unexpected power outages. Be available for on-call support during critical situations and ensure quick resolution to minimize downtime.
- Supervision and Team Safety: Oversee safe generator operation and maintenance activities. Ensure that team members follow H\&S guidelines, especially when handling fuel and electrical systems. Promote a safety-first culture and lead by example in applying all risk mitigation protocols.
- Other Duties: Carry out any other duties as assigned by management, contributing to the overall efficiency and reliability of electrical power systems across the facility.
The above list is not exhaustive, and the jobholder will be required to be flexible as specific responsibilities could change in the future, and this would be at the discretion of the line manager and Senior Management. The job description may be reviewed to meet changes in business needs. The jobholder may also take on other ad hoc tasks as and when required, including participating in the Embassy’s emergency planning and any response to a crisis.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience
- Associate degree in Electromechanical Technology, or related field
- Minimum of 5 years hands-on experience maintaining and repairing electrical generators and ATS systems.
- Proficiency in reading electrical schematics and wiring diagrams
- Strong knowledge of generator control systems and ATS mechanisms.
- Experience with brands such as Perkins or similar is preferred.
- Analytical thinking and effective troubleshooting skills.
- Good time management, reliability, and the ability to work independently or in a team.
- Basic computer skills for report logging.
- Valid driver’s licence
Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
- Technical certification or Diploma in Electromechanical Technology or electrical systems
- Willingness to attend training or certification programs.

Working hours and remuneration:
The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including up to 21 days of annual leave (calculated pro-rata).
The role grade is Administrative Assistant (AA) with a base salary of US $ 1,641 per month. This base salary is paid 13 times a year. In addition, the role attracts a security allowance payable as part of this package. This security allowance is subject to review and may be altered or withdrawn at any time.
No accommodation nor relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.
This position is for a full-time employment on a permanent contract basis. Employment is also subject to a 90-day probationary period.
Conditioned working hours are 38 hours per week. Normal working hours are Sunday to Wednesday from 08:00 to 16:00 and Thursday from 08:00-14:00. The jobholder will be required to be flexible in their approach to hours worked as these will be dictated by operational needs and may involve working out of hours (evenings/ weekends/ holidays) or emergency on call hours.
The jobholder may have to work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions, often in confirmed spaces, on rooftops or in mechanical rooms, they may be exposed to noise, dust and hazardous material for which PPE will be provided. This role may include the jobholder to climb ladders, lift heavy equipment and materials up to 25kg and stand for long periods of time.
