The British Embassy Baghdad currently has a vacancy for a Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC)Technician, job grade Administrative Assistant (AA)
The HVAC Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, inspection, and repair of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. The technician ensures optimal operation of HVAC equipment to provide a safe, comfortable, and energy-efficient environment for building occupants.
Duties and responsibilities:
Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?
- HVAC System Installation: Install various HVAC systems including split units, ducted systems, chillers, cassette systems, and their associated controls. Ensure all installations are completed in line with UK codes, manufacturer specifications, and British Embassy Baghdad (BEB)- Technical Works Group (TWG) standards.
- Preventive Planned Maintenance: Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on HVAC units to enhance performance and extend equipment lifespan. Tasks include cleaning/replacing filters, lubricating components, testing circuits, checking refrigerant levels, and verifying system functionality.
- Diagnostics and Fault Identification: Inspect HVAC systems to diagnose mechanical, electrical, or refrigeration faults. Use appropriate testing tools to identify issues in components like compressors, motors, thermostats, and control systems.
- Repair and Component Replacement: Carry out minor and major repairs based on work request forms. Replace defective parts such as fans, valves, motors, and control modules. Repressurize and recharge systems where needed. All repairs must meet TWG and BEB standards.
- Compliance and Safety: Follow all H&S policies, including proper use of PPE, lockout/tagout procedures, and hazard reporting. Adhere to UK refrigerant handling regulations and BEB-TWG’s safety protocols and requirements, especially when working with hazardous substances or at heights.
- Documentation and Reporting: Complete work orders, service logs, and inspection reports accurately. Maintain updated records for compliance, audits, and future reference.
- Communication and Coordination: Report material needs, delays, or technical issues promptly to the HVAC supervisor. Ensure alignment with the maintenance schedule and any directives issued by TWG management.
- Team Support and Supervision: Provide guidance to HVAC assistants or apprentices. Oversee team safety during maintenance activities and assist with ensuring tasks are executed to high quality and safety standards.
- Work Area Maintenance: Maintain cleanliness and organization of the work area. Ensure tools and equipment are stored properly and workspaces comply with fire and electrical safety standards.
- Additional Duties: Perform any other duties assigned by TWG management based on operational requirements or emergencies.
The above list is not exhaustive, and the jobholder will be required to be flexible as specific responsibilities could change in the future, and this would be at the discretion of the line manager and Senior Management. The job description may be reviewed to meet changes in business needs. The jobholder may also take on other ad hoc tasks as and when required, including participating in the Embassy’s emergency planning and any response to a crisis.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience
- High school diploma or equivalent (required).
- Technical certification or diploma in HVAC systems or electrical systems (required).
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience in HVAC systems installation, servicing, and repair.
- Solid knowledge of HVAC systems, including installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of air conditioning units. Additionally have the familiarity with HVAC components and systems.
- Strong understanding of refrigeration cycles, electrical systems, and control logic.
- Proficient with HVAC diagnostic tools and hand/power tools.
- Analytical thinking and effective troubleshooting skills.
- Good time management, reliability, and the ability to work independently or in a team.
- Basic computer skills for report logging.
- Valid Full drivers licence
- Willingness to attend training or certification programs.
Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
- Relevant certification in HVAC or air-conditioning and any other technical certification

Working hours and remuneration:
The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including up to 21 days of annual leave (calculated pro-rata).
The role grade is AA with a base salary of US $ 1,699 per month. This base salary is paid 13 times a year. In addition, the role attracts a security allowance payable as part of this package. This security allowance is subject to review and may be altered or withdrawn at any time.
No accommodation nor relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.
This position is for a full-time employment on a permanent contract basis. Employment is also subject to a 90-day probationary period.
Conditioned working hours are 38 hours per week. Normal working hours are Sunday to Wednesday from 08:00 to 16:00 and Thursday from 08:00-14:00. The jobholder will be required to be flexible in their approach to hours worked as these will be dictated by operational needs and may involve working out of hours (evenings/ weekends/ holidays) or emergency on call hours.
The jobholder may have to work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions, often in confirmed spaces, on rooftops or in mechanical rooms, they may be exposed to temperature extremes, noise, dust, and chemicals. This role may include the jobholder to climb ladders, lift heavy equipment and materials up to 25kg and stand for long periods of time. The role will also may require overtime, weekend shifts, or emergency response availability.
